The case study identifies a new product opportunity for Airbnb to expand its offerings by addressing a genuine social need: helping people connect through shared interests while unlocking meaningful business growth.
Airbnb Meets is the proposed connection layer that brings safe, host-led, interest-based gatherings into everyday life. It extends Airbnb’s trusted rails—identity, reviews, payouts, and venues—from trips to community building centered on shared interests, with a simple subscription model and a phased, city-by-city rollout governed by clear gates and guardrails.
This case study outlines the human need, the business thesis, and a build-ready plan backed by six core documents: Strategic Planning Report, PRD, Product Roadmap, GTM Strategy, Risk Register, and the North Star Metric (NSM) Framework. Together, they align vision, scope, metrics, risks, and go-to-market strategy so the team can execute with speed and confidence, focused on one compass: the share of first-time attendees who return within 30 days.
People are more digitally connected than ever, yet many feel lonely and disconnected from real community. They want to meet others who share their interests, at home and while traveling. Today, discovery is noisy, trust is unclear, plans are flaky, and most first meets never become second ones. Airbnb already powers Stays, Experiences, and Services for travel moments. Let’s now empower this era of community and belonging through shared interests—Meets.
Airbnb Meets provides a simple, trusted path from shared interest to real-life community. Built on Airbnb identity, reviews, payouts, and venues, it makes host-led gatherings safe, reliable, and repeatable. One compass keeps us aligned: the share of first-time attendees who return within 30 days.
Defines the social need and why Airbnb should solve it now, framing Meets as a mission-aligned, subscription-first expansion that can scale city by city under clear gates and guardrails—on a credible path toward $500M+ ARR.
Clarifies exactly who we serve—Guests, Hosts, Venues—and what each needs to succeed. It also shows what Guest onboarding to Meets Discover looks like and outlines the landing/marketing pages for Guest, Host, and Venue.
Defines how we move from vision to MVP with detailed functional requirements, acceptance criteria, and non-functional guardrails for safety, and reliability. Lays out a pragmatic plan for product development, rollout, and scaling.
Sets the single success metric (repeat within 30 days) and the leading indicators that drive it. It spells out how we count each metric, where we see it, and the thresholds a city must hit to unlock the next phase.
Sets the product playbook for launch and growth: positioning, priority audiences, channels, and partners. Codifies risk ownership and mitigations so no-shows, venue reliability, safety, and surface confusion are managed as we scale—backed by clear triggers, SLAs, and on-call protocols.
Airbnb Meets can unlock serious revenue for Airbnb Inc. and its shareholders—while solving a real social need by expanding belonging and community through shared interests. I’d love to help turn this vision into reality.
